Iran has sent a formal protest letter to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi, strongly condemning repeated threats of military action by the United States over Tehran’s nuclear program.
According to a report by Mehr News Agency, Iran’s permanent mission warned in the recently dispatched diplomatic letter that normalizing such threats of force could seriously undermine the credibility of the IAEA and have far-reaching negative consequences for the global non-proliferation regime, particularly the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
The Iranian mission emphasized that accepting these threats as routine would weaken the foundations of international trust built through the IAEA’s verification mechanisms. Tehran described the statements as “reckless” and stressed that condemning such rhetoric is essential, calling for full accountability for those issuing the threats.
The protest was triggered by remarks made on December 29 during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, where U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington was open to negotiations with Tehran but that the option of military force remained “on the table.”
Trump warned that if Iran attempted to resume certain activities, the United States would have “no choice” but to swiftly destroy those facilities.
The remarks drew immediate and strong reactions from Iran. Within hours, the country’s political, military, and diplomatic leadership rejected Washington’s statements, firmly reiterating Iran’s right to defend its sovereignty and national security.
