Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has warned that if President Donald Trump starts a war, he will not be able to control how it ends.
Speaking in a late-night interview on Wednesday, Ghalibaf said Iran is prepared to engage in talks, but only under clear conditions. He stressed that Tehran will not participate in negotiations imposed through the use of force.
In an interview with CNN, Ghalibaf said, “We are ready for dialogue, but we do not believe the kind of talks the president wants can be considered real negotiations.” He accused Washington of undermining diplomacy by relying on military pressure.
He claimed that just two days before the sixth round of talks with Iran, the United States had effectively “dropped bombs on the negotiating table,” weakening the prospects for diplomacy.
Ghalibaf made it clear that no negotiations would take place unless the economic rights of the Iranian people are guaranteed. “We do not consider instructions to be negotiations,” he said.
According to him, talks conducted under military pressure would only escalate tensions further. He argued that negotiations carried out in the shadow of war serve only to increase instability. Ghalibaf added that if Trump truly seeks a Nobel Peace Prize, he should distance himself from what he described as warmongers and advocates of surrender within his circle.
His remarks come at a time when Trump has claimed that a “massive naval fleet” is moving toward Iran. The US president has also warned that “time is running out” and urged Tehran to come to the negotiating table.
