Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has announced his resignation after his ruling coalition lost the national parliamentary election, paving the way for a change in government.

Kristersson shared the decision on the social media platform X on Thursday, requesting formal relief from his duties to allow the parliamentary speaker to immediately initiate the process of forming a new administration.

According to the election authority's final tallies, the center-left opposition bloc secured 176 seats in the 349-member Riksdag, narrowly edging out Kristersson's right-wing coalition, which finished with 173 seats following a tightly contested race.
