NEWS DESKIn response to increasing climate challenges such as desertification and drought, Saudi Arabia has embarked on a cloud seeding initiative similar to those adopted by several other countries worldwide.
Under the Saudi Regional Cloud Seeding Program, the initiative has initially been launched in six key regions: Riyadh, Qassim, Hail, Makkah, Al-Baha, and Asir. The primary goal of this program is to enhance rainfall, increase water resources, and expand forest cover across the Kingdom.
According to local media outlet Al Arabiya.net, the cloud seeding operations will gradually expand to cover the entire country.
Cloud seeding is a scientific method used to accelerate or induce precipitation by introducing specific chemicals into suitable clouds. These chemicals modify the natural processes within the cloud to enhance rainfall.
Saudi Arabia has stated that it uses specially equipped aircraft for cloud seeding missions. These planes are claimed to be made from environmentally friendly materials, and the chemicals used in the seeding process are reported to be non-harmful to the environment.
This initiative was announced by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman as a result of discussions at the Middle East Green Summit. It also aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, the country’s long-term development strategy aimed at diversifying the economy and addressing environmental challenges.
The cloud seeding project aims to:
The first phase of the program has already been launched in Riyadh, Hail, and Qassim regions. Last year, the Kingdom began preparing skilled personnel and investing in the development of indigenous technology and aircraft for the program. By building local capabilities, Saudi Arabia aims to enhance the sustainability of the project and reduce operational costs.
This marks a significant step toward the Kingdom’s environmental resilience and long-term sustainability goals.
