NEWS DESKThe United States has recently introduced significant changes to its non-immigrant visa (NIV) process, a move that is set to directly affect Indian travellers, students, and professionals. Under the new US visa rules, conveniences like booking visa interviews in third countries will no longer be allowed.
This means longer waiting times, higher costs, and more planning for anyone applying for B1/B2, H1-B, or student visas. Understanding these changes is crucial for timely travel, academic schedules, and work commitments.
Previously, Indian applicants could book B1/B2 (business and tourist) visa interviews at U.S. embassies in neighbouring countries. This option was often used to secure faster appointments when slots in India were fully booked. Under the new rules, this convenience has been removed.
Now, Indian applicants must schedule their visa interviews exclusively at U.S. consulates and embassies in India.
Experts warn that this change is likely to increase waiting times significantly, especially during peak travel seasons.
With the restriction to in-country appointments, applicants may face longer queues and delays in processing. The U.S. State Department has also recently increased visa application fees. In addition to the application cost, applicants must now factor in travel and accommodation expenses for in-person interviews, which can make the overall process more expensive.
Indian students planning to study in the United States and professionals seeking H1-B visas are expected to feel the most impact. Extended waiting times could disrupt academic schedules and job start dates. Many will now need to plan several months in advance to ensure visas are approved on time.
