"Amar mayor, Tomar mayor, Mamdani Mamdani!" (My mayor, Your mayor, Mamdani Mamdani!) — the chant echoed through Hillside Avenue in New York as Bengali supporters of mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani rallied with enthusiasm.
A video posted on Mamdani's Instagram today shows a lively crowd with many of the South Asian and Muslim New Yorkers along Hillside Avenue, where the candidate addressed supporters.
"I want to take a moment here. I just want to ask everyone in this crowd if you can raise your hand if you have been called a terrorist while living in this city, if you have had to deal with your name being mangled every day that you go into work," Mamdani said.
He added, "If you have ever been made to feel less than because of who you are, because of where you came from, because of what you believe in. This is why these words offend me. Because they are about all of us."
The mayoral candidate further said, "We are not just saying goodbye to a disgraced former governor on Tuesday. We are saying goodbye to the politics of that disgrace."
Another video shared by the Instagram page bengalis4zohran captured the South Asian diaspora — particularly Bangladeshis — chanting slogans in their signature style, complete with rhythmic repetitions of "Mamdani, Mamdani, Zohran Mamdani!"
New Yorkers will pick a new mayor on Tuesday (4 November) after an unpredictable race. It seems the familiar sounds of Bangladesh's election campaign rallies have found a new echo — this time, in the heart of New York.
