Hundreds of towering steel storage tanks dominate the landscape of central Oklahoma, forming the largest privately operated crude oil storage hub in the United States. Together, the facilities can hold nearly 90 million barrels of crude oil, but after six months of heightened global energy demand and ongoing geopolitical conflict, inventories have fallen to just 22.2 million barrels—
one of the lowest levels recorded in recent years.
The sharp decline reflects strong international demand and elevated oil prices, prompting energy traders and storage operators to rapidly draw down inventories for sale into the market.
Market analysts say the future of U.S. crude stockpiles will largely depend on the duration and trajectory of the conflict involving the United States and Iran. At the same time, governments and energy companies around the world are increasingly seeking alternative ways to build strategic reserves to reduce the risk of a major global energy shock.
Even major Gulf oil producers such as Saudi Arabia are reportedly considering investments in overseas storage facilities located away from vulnerable maritime chokepoints, including the Strait of Hormuz, to strengthen supply security.
The small Oklahoma town of Cushing has long been one of the most important centers of the global oil trade.
Commercial oil production began there in 1912, and the rapid expansion of pipeline infrastructure during the 1920s transformed the town into a key distribution hub. Although local oil production later declined, Cushing's strategic location and extensive pipeline network cemented its role as the delivery and pricing center for U.S. crude.
Since 1983, the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) has designated Cushing as the official delivery point and pricing hub for its benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures contracts.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), crude inventories at Cushing have fallen close to the site's minimum operating level—the threshold below which storage facilities may face operational risks.
Industry experts warn that drawing inventories below this level could damage critical infrastructure, including floating steel roofs and mixing equipment inside the storage tanks, potentially disrupting normal operations.
The decline is not limited to commercial storage.
The United States' Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR)—the federal government's emergency crude oil stockpile—has also fallen to its lowest level since 1982, raising concerns about the country's ability to respond to future supply disruptions.
The current situation marks a stark contrast to the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As lockdowns caused fuel demand to collapse, storage tanks at Cushing reached capacity and crude oil prices briefly fell into negative territory, forcing producers to pay buyers to take oil off their hands.
Today, the opposite is true.
With crude supplies tightening and prices remaining elevated, traders are moving oil directly to refineries and export markets rather than storing it for future sale.
U.S. diesel prices have already climbed close to their highest levels of the year, reflecting continued pressure on fuel markets.
Analysts warn that if the current conflict persists, global refining, transportation, and energy supply infrastructure could come under increasing strain, heightening the risk of further price increases and broader disruptions across international energy markets.
