A new Politico Magazine survey reveals significant divisions emerging within former President Donald Trump’s support base, suggesting the once unified MAGA coalition is beginning to fracture.
According to the poll, 38% of voters who supported Trump in 2024 no longer identify as Republicans, signaling a notable shift in party loyalty. More than one-third of Trump’s 2024 voters report weakening allegiance to the MAGA movement, with many distancing themselves from its message and leadership.
The survey highlights a widening gap between MAGA and non-MAGA Republican-leaning voters on core economic concerns.
Non-MAGA respondents also report higher levels of anxiety about rising living costs—59%, compared with 48% among those aligned with MAGA.
On healthcare, just 55% of non-MAGA Republicans trust the party to reduce healthcare expenses. And in a November 2024 survey, only 46% of non-MAGA voters said they believed Trump had used his opportunity effectively to turn around the economy.
Analysts warn that such fractures could pose major challenges for any potential Republican successor to Trump heading into the 2028 presidential race. Maintaining a unified coalition may be increasingly difficult as voter loyalty becomes more fragmented.
The weakening of Trump’s traditional support base could also have substantial consequences for upcoming midterm elections, where GOP candidates may struggle to mobilize a divided electorate.
