Russian President Vladimir Putin has been invited to join US President Donald Trump’s proposed “Board of Peace,” an initiative aimed at addressing global conflicts and overseeing governance and reconstruction efforts in Gaza, the Kremlin confirmed on Monday, January 19.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that President Putin had received the invitation and that Moscow was currently reviewing the proposal and seeking clarification from Washington. He did not indicate whether the Russian leader was inclined to accept the offer.
Putin has previously spoken positively about Trump’s attempts to resolve long-standing international conflicts. In comments made last October, he said Trump was making significant efforts to tackle crises that had persisted for years or even decades, adding that success in the Middle East would mark a historic achievement.
Russia has traditionally maintained relations with both Israeli and Palestinian leadership. However, ties with Israel have cooled since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, while Moscow has strengthened relations with Israel’s regional rivals, including Iran. Russia has also deepened engagement with Gulf states as its relations with Western nations have deteriorated.
The Kremlin has repeatedly criticized Israel’s military response in Gaza and called for restraint. Speaking last year during a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Putin described the situation in Gaza as a “full-scale humanitarian catastrophe” and said Russia was providing ongoing assistance to the Palestinian people.
According to the White House, the “Board of Peace,” to be chaired by President Trump, would focus on governance capacity-building, regional cooperation, reconstruction, investment promotion, and large-scale funding initiatives. Invitations have reportedly been extended to numerous world leaders and senior officials, though acceptance has not been confirmed.
Among those said to have received invitations are leaders from Albania, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Cyprus, Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, Hungary, Romania, Paraguay, India, Italy, and Pakistan.
