U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the U.S. State Department said on Saturday.

The meeting comes at a critical time as Washington awaits Tehran’s response to a proposed peace framework, with Qatar increasingly playing an important mediating role in regional diplomacy.

In a statement, State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said Rubio praised Qatar’s partnership with the United States on a range of regional and international issues.

“The Secretary and the Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister discussed the importance of continued close coordination to address threats across the Middle East and to ensure regional stability and security,” the statement said.

The discussions also covered U.S. cooperation with Qatar in the defense sector and broader efforts to strengthen strategic coordination in the region.

Qatar, one of Washington’s closest allies in the Middle East, has in recent years played a key role in mediating several regional conflicts and diplomatic negotiations, including ongoing efforts involving Iran and the United States.
