Heavy security measures implemented to protect Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi during his high-profile diplomatic visit to Washington have triggered severe flight disruptions at Ronald Reagan National Airport.

According to a report by CBS News on Wednesday (July 15), commercial takeoffs and landings at the major transit hub were fully suspended for several hours on Tuesday between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM ET. This emergency airspace closure, driven by heightened alert levels during the ongoing war with Iran, led to the immediate cancellation of at least 126 flights and delayed over 300 others.

The restricted airspace over Washington and northern Virginia has remained under tight surveillance since a tragic 2025 mid-air collision between a commercial jet and a military helicopter. To minimize regional disruption, White House and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials actively coordinated timing schedules during Prime Minister al-Zaidi's motorcade transit from the White House to the Pentagon. With the US-Iran conflict entering its fourth month, counter-terrorism experts and domestic intelligence agencies remain on high alert against potential foreign threats on sovereign soil.
