BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir remarked that the signing of the July Charter marks “the beginning of a new chapter in the political history of Bangladesh.”

He made this comment in response to journalists' questions on Friday (October 17) afternoon after the signing of the July Charter at the South Plaza of the National Parliament.

He said, “The interim government had formed several commissions, and after almost eight months of tireless work, the signing of this Charter today has initiated a new chapter in the political history of Bangladesh. I extend my thanks and gratitude to Professor Muhammad Yunus, all political parties, and the National Consensus Commission—those who worked hard and led the process, including the Reform Commission, who toiled day after day to make this possible—and to members from all parties including our own Salahuddin Ahmed.”

BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed said, “The July Charter 2025 has been signed. This is a memorable day in the history of this nation. It will always remain significant for us as long as the history of Bangladesh exists.”

He added, “Today marks the beginning of fulfilling the aspirations of the people and the sacrifices of our martyrs... this is the beginning of a journey. Through its implementation, we will be able to achieve a democratic state structure and reforms. This new structure will guide our new journey forward.”

Salahuddin Ahmed further stated, “Through this journey, strong democratic institutions will be built, constitutional institutions will be strengthened, and there will be balance in all branches of the state. No branch of the state will be able to exert authority over another.”

The BNP Standing Committee member said, “A functioning democratic state will be established by maintaining constitutional balance among all branches within the constitutional framework, Inshallah. We look forward to that day. We have a lot of work ahead. This is just the beginning.”

He noted that all political parties have signed the July Charter, and said, “A few individuals or parties may not have signed yet. We hope they will sign in the future. That opportunity remains open.”

In response to a question, Salahuddin Ahmed said, “According to Article 65, Subsection 2 of the Constitution, each regional constituency of Bangladesh must elect 300 Members of Parliament through direct public vote. Additionally, there will be reserved seats for women.”

He added, “Some are now saying that the Election Commission is only responsible for conducting elections and nothing else… that is true. The Election Commission will indeed conduct the elections, but how it will conduct them is clearly outlined. So there is no room to mislead the nation. Still, if the Chief Advisor wants to hold discussions—we believe in dialogue.”
