He made the remark on Wednesday afternoon while speaking at a discussion titled “Bangladesh–China Relations: The Way Forward” held at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka. The event was organized by the Association of Former Ambassadors (AOFA), with several former Bangladeshi diplomats in attendance. Ambassador Yao Wen was the keynote speaker.
During the question-and-answer session, when asked about China’s role in resolving the Rohingya crisis, Yao Wen said,
“China has played a significant role in seeking a solution to the Rohingya crisis. Both Bangladesh and Myanmar have requested China’s assistance. We have also made efforts toward a pilot repatriation of Rohingya refugees. However, the issue is too complex to be resolved by China alone — it is beyond our capability. Many stakeholders are involved in this crisis.”
He further explained that China had tried to facilitate repatriation in 2023, but “various obstacles affected our efforts.”
“Some countries and organizations do not want the repatriation to take place. All stakeholders must contribute to resolving this issue. China will continue to play its part,” the ambassador added.
