Bangladesh has received assurances of support from member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in its bid for the presidency of the United Nations General Assembly, Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman said.

The foreign minister made the remarks to journalists at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka shortly after returning from an official visit to Saudi Arabia late Friday night.

Dr. Rahman said OIC representatives had not only pledged their support for Bangladesh’s candidacy but also promised to campaign actively on its behalf. “The representatives of OIC member states have said they will not only support Bangladesh but will also conduct campaign efforts in our favor,” he stated.

Reaffirming Bangladesh’s longstanding position on the Palestinian issue, the foreign minister said the country stands firmly with Palestine. “Bangladesh fully supports Palestine. We support the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital,” he said, noting that former President Ziaur Rahman had also advocated for the same position.

Dr. Rahman further said Bangladesh unequivocally condemned Israel’s recent land purchase law during the OIC meeting. “We clearly stated that Israel’s actions regarding land are a blatant violation of international law,” he added.

The foreign minister also expressed concern over rising tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan. “War never brings welfare for anyone,” he said, adding that Bangladesh is closely and cautiously monitoring the situation.

Bangladesh’s diplomatic engagements at the OIC meeting reflect its broader efforts to strengthen multilateral ties and secure international backing for its global initiatives.
