A delegation of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) held a meeting with Paul Kapur on Thursday to discuss bilateral relations, government policies and global developments.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, BNP Standing Committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan said the discussion focused on relations between the people of the United States and Bangladesh, government policies and various developments around the world.

The meeting took place at the residence of the US ambassador in the Gulshan diplomatic area of Dhaka at around 11:00am Bangladesh time and concluded at 11:50am.

The BNP delegation was led by Moyeen Khan and included five members. Among them were Member of Parliament Barrister Naoshad Zamir, Dr. Mahbubur RahmanNayeeba Yusuf and Dhaka District BNP General Secretary Nipun Roy Chowdhury.

Moyeen Khan said it is well known that the United States has been a well-wisher of Bangladesh and has supported the country in various ways in the past.

“With a new government formed in Bangladesh, it is natural that they would visit the country,” he said.

He added that discussions also covered Bangladesh’s current situation, policy directions, future plans and relations with different countries, particularly with the United States.

When asked whether a recently signed agreement between the United States and Bangladesh during the final period of the interim government was discussed, Moyeen Khan said the issue had been discussed with the government earlier.

He was referring to remarks made by Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, who said the agreement had been reached with the “consent” of both BNP and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.

Moyeen Khan said details of those discussions would be communicated by the government.

Asked whether the role of the opposition in parliament was discussed, the BNP leader said the issue was not directly raised with them.

“Our focus was on diplomatic relations, foreign relations and economic ties with the United States,” he added.
