Information Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has said the government is committed to ensuring full freedom of the media while also protecting the public from misinformation and disinformation.

He made the remarks during a courtesy meeting with Brent T. Christensen at his office on Monday morning.

During the meeting, both sides discussed strengthening bilateral ties as well as expanding cooperation in media, culture, and knowledge-based sectors between Bangladesh and the United States.

The minister emphasized the need to bring digital platforms under proper regulation in today’s technology-driven world. He noted that countries must work together to prevent misuse of these platforms.

He also highlighted the importance of ensuring transparency and accountability alongside press freedom. Swapan said the government is holding regular consultations with media stakeholders and plans to develop an effective roadmap based on their recommendations. He sought technical and professional support from the United States in this regard.

The US ambassador said that Washington offers scholarships in specialized fields to help Bangladeshi students and professionals enhance their skills, adding that such initiatives can significantly benefit the country’s youth.

During the meeting, the minister also expressed hope for justice in the recent killing of two Bangladeshi students in Florida. Representatives from the US Embassy informed him that the suspect in the case has already been arrested.

Senior officials from the US Embassy were also present at the meeting.
