Bangladesh is set to observe the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers on Wednesday with due respect and solemnity, recognizing the invaluable contributions of its peacekeepers to global peace and security.
Although the day is observed worldwide on May 29 each year, Bangladesh is commemorating it on June 10 this year due to the Eid holidays.
Over the decades, Bangladesh has played a significant role in promoting peace, stability, and humanitarian assistance through the United Nations. Members of the Bangladesh Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police have earned widespread international recognition for their professionalism, dedication, and sacrifice in UN peacekeeping missions. The United Nations has repeatedly acknowledged and praised Bangladesh's outstanding contributions.
Today, Bangladesh is regarded as one of the world's largest contributors of uniformed personnel to UN peacekeeping operations. Bangladeshi peacekeepers are serving in conflict-affected and fragile regions across Africa, the Middle East, and other parts of the world. Beyond maintaining security, they contribute to protecting civilians, delivering humanitarian assistance, supporting electoral processes, and helping rebuild war-torn infrastructure.
The journey has not been without sacrifice. Many Bangladeshi peacekeepers have laid down their lives in the line of duty while serving under the UN flag. Their courage and dedication have brought honor to the nation and further elevated Bangladesh's reputation on the global stage.
A memorable example of international recognition came in 2007, when Bangladesh celebrated the International Day of UN Peacekeepers for the first time. Following the successful observance of the occasion, the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh sent a letter expressing appreciation to the Bangladesh Armed Forces and the officials involved in organizing the event.
In a letter dated May 31, 2007, then UN Resident Coordinator Renata Lok-Dessallien conveyed her sincere gratitude to Brigadier General Mohammad Mahbub Haider Khan for organizing the country's first observance of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.
The United Nations formally expressed its appreciation to the Bangladesh Armed Forces and thanked Brigadier General Haider Khan, who was then Director of Overseas Operations at Army Headquarters and Chairman of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers Celebration Committee.
The recognition received from the United Nations serves as a reminder that Bangladesh is not merely a participant in global peace efforts but a trusted and respected partner. As the country marks this year's observance, the professionalism, humanitarian commitment, and sacrifices of Bangladeshi peacekeepers continue to strengthen the nation's standing in the international community and inspire future generations.
