High Court Orders Grameen Kalyan to Pay Tk 666 Crore in Tax

The High Court has ruled that Grameen Kalyan, an organisation owned by former chief adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government Dr Muhammad Yunus, must pay Tk 666 crore in taxes claimed by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

The verdict was delivered on Thursday by a High Court bench headed by Justice Md Mojibur Rahman Mia. The court dismissed a rule issued earlier in connection with the tax dispute, paving the way for the NBR to collect the claimed amount.

Barristers Abdullah Al Mamun and Fida M Kamal represented Dr Muhammad Yunus during the hearing.

Earlier, on October 4, following the July mass uprising, the High Court had withdrawn, on its own initiative, an earlier judgment directing Grameen Kalyan to pay the Tk 666 crore tax claimed by the NBR.

The earlier judgment had been delivered by a High Court bench comprising Justice Mohammad Khurshid Alam Sarker and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir. The bench subsequently recalled its decision and sent the case records to the Chief Justice.

The case was later assigned to a new High Court bench, which delivered the latest ruling on Thursday.
