Bangladesh Parliament Passes Bill to Replace RAB with Special Response Battalion

Bangladesh’s parliament has passed the Special Response Battalion (SRB) Bill 2026 in an amended form, paving the way for the dissolution of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the establishment of a new force aimed at strengthening law enforcement capabilities, training and transparency.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed placed the amended bill before parliament on Thursday for approval. The legislation was passed following a debate despite objections from the opposition.

Opposition Leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman raised objections to several provisions of the bill and urged parliament not to approve the legislation. However, the bill was passed despite his objections and concerns raised by opposition lawmakers.

Officials involved in the process said the new law is intended to establish an effective framework for enhancing the capabilities of law enforcement agencies, ensuring necessary training and maintaining greater transparency in their operations.

The new legislation will replace the existing RAB structure with the proposed Special Response Battalion.
