Since the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel took effect, an average of 560 tons of food is being delivered daily to the Gaza Strip. However, this amount is far from sufficient to meet the overwhelming needs of the famine-stricken region, according to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). This information was reported by Al Jazeera on Friday (October 17).

UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher stated that since parts of Gaza are experiencing famine-like conditions, thousands of aid convoys must now be allowed to enter each week to alleviate the crisis.

Speaking from Geneva, WFP spokesperson Abeer Etefa said the ceasefire has opened a narrow window for increasing food assistance, and they are responding swiftly and urgently. However, she acknowledged that access—especially to Gaza City and northern Gaza—remains extremely challenging.

Etefa also mentioned that nine bakeries are currently operational in Gaza, producing over 100,000 loaves of bread daily (each weighing 2 kg). These bakeries are providing daily meals to families of five among Gaza’s population of over 2 million people.

Previously, WFP had announced that it had enough stockpiled food to feed the entire population of Gaza for three months.
