Pakistan has expressed deep concern over the hoisting of a flag atop the so-called Ram Mandir constructed at the site of the historic Babri Mosque in India.

In a statement issued from the federal capital, the Foreign Office spokesperson said Pakistan has urged the international community to take notice of the growing Islamophobia in India.

The Foreign Office stated that the Babri Mosque was a centuries-old place of worship, which was demolished by extremists on 6 December 1992. The spokesperson noted that the Indian government facilitated the acquittal of those extremists through the courts.

The statement added that the Indian government permitted the construction of a temple on the demolished mosque’s site. Other historic mosques in India now face similar threats of desecration. India’s discriminatory actions, it added, reflect the troubling treatment of minorities in the country.

The Foreign Office said Indian Muslims face social, economic, and political marginalisation. The international community must take note of rising Islamophobia in India and speak out against hate speeches and attacks targeting minorities.

The spokesperson further called on the United Nations to ensure the protection of Islamic heritage in India and safeguard Indian Muslims as well as all other religious communities.
