The infant, named Mohammad, died after suffering from hypothermia inside a dilapidated tent where his family had taken shelter. With no proper roofing, insufficient warm clothing and little protection from freezing temperatures, the tent offered almost no defense against the winter cold. The child’s death underscores the extreme vulnerability of newborns and children living in Gaza’s displacement camps.
Thousands of families in Al-Mawasi and other areas have been forced to live in makeshift tents following repeated displacement. Basic necessities such as heating, blankets, winter clothing and adequate shelter remain scarce. Medical workers warn that without urgent humanitarian assistance, more children—especially infants—face life-threatening risks from cold-related illnesses.
Aid agencies say the situation has worsened as winter temperatures drop, while fuel shortages and damaged infrastructure limit relief efforts. Mohammad’s death is a grim reminder of the human cost of displacement, where survival itself has become a daily struggle for Gaza’s civilian population.
