The United Nations has placed Israel on a “blacklist” over allegations of violence and abuse against women in conflict zones and war-affected areas.
The development was confirmed on Thursday by Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon.
Danon strongly condemned the decision, describing it as “politically motivated” and “detached from reality.” According to a report by The Jerusalem Post, Israel has also suspended relations with the office of UN Secretary-General António Guterres in protest against the move.
The UN’s decision follows multiple reports published by human rights organizations and international media outlets, including Middle East Eye, concerning allegations of abuse and mistreatment of Palestinians by Israeli forces since October 2023.
The Jerusalem Post was the first to report Israel’s inclusion on the blacklist. According to the report, the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) has been included in the 2026 blacklist, while other Israeli institutions remain under observation for possible future inclusion.
Reacting to the decision, Ambassador Danon said the UN Secretary-General had placed Israel in the same category as Hamas, ISIS, and “some of the world’s most horrific terrorist organizations.”
“This marks the complete collapse of the UN’s remaining credibility and a profound moral failure,” he said.
The blacklist forms part of the UN Secretary-General’s annual report on Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (CRSV), which identifies parties suspected of committing violence and abuse during armed conflicts.
