Former West Bengal Chief Minister and senior leader Mamata Banerjee sparked controversy on Tuesday after making dramatic allegations regarding a major killing in Bangladesh and claiming that senior figures in the Indian government were linked to the case.

Speaking at a protest program in Kolkata’s Dharmatala area, Banerjee said she was fully aware of the circumstances surrounding what she described as a “major murder” in Bangladesh. She alleged that the suspects in the case had entered West Bengal through the Meghalaya border and were subsequently arrested by the West Bengal Police’s Special Task Force (STF).

According to Banerjee, India’s Union Home Minister Amit Shah personally called her after the arrests and requested that the matter not be made public.

Quoting the alleged conversation, Banerjee claimed Shah told her: “Please ask the West Bengal Police to ensure that this matter does not go outside.”

Although she did not identify the victim, the suspects, or the specific case, Banerjee made several suggestive remarks. She said, “Who was made to carry out the killing, and whose names emerged? Even though governments have changed, I still know everything. My heart is a repository of words, information, and truth.”

She further stated that she had deliberately withheld information out of courtesy, concern for national interests, and sensitivity to the situation in Bangladesh.

“I am not revealing the name out of decency. People in Bangladesh would become agitated. I do not want that. I love my country,” she said.

Banerjee’s comments have generated significant discussion in political circles, particularly because they involve allegations concerning a cross-border criminal case and purported involvement of senior Indian officials. Her remarks come roughly a month after the Trinamool Congress lost power, adding further political significance to the statement.

As of now, the Government of India has not issued an official response to Banerjee’s allegations. The identity of the Bangladesh case she was referring to also remains unclear, and no evidence has yet been publicly presented to support the claims.
