A Bangladeshi national was among those killed in a devastating fire at a hotel in India's capital, New Delhi, according to Indian media reports.
Indian news outlets NDTV and The Indian Express reported that 21 people lost their lives in the incident, including 17 foreign nationals. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims.
Citing police sources, the reports said the foreign victims were citizens of Bangladesh, Nigeria, Liberia, and Mozambique.
According to The Indian Express, the hotel, named Micasa Inn, is located in the Malviya Nagar area of New Delhi and is particularly popular among African nationals visiting India on medical visas. The hotel is situated near several major healthcare facilities, including Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Hospital, Max Hospital, and All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
According to NDTV, the fire originated in the hotel's restaurant on Wednesday morning. The establishment, located in a narrow lane, has approximately 25 rooms. Most guests were reportedly asleep when the fire rapidly spread through the building.
Video footage from the scene showed several people jumping from the building in an attempt to escape the flames.
Kesar Singh, a chef at the hotel's restaurant, told local media that the fire broke out at around 8:00 a.m. while he was attempting to switch on an electric stove.
“When I tried to turn on the electric stove, flames suddenly erupted and spread in all directions,” Singh said. “Within moments, I realized the fire had engulfed the entire hotel.”
Emergency services responded to the scene and launched rescue operations, while authorities began an investigation into the cause of the blaze.
Officials have not yet provided a final casualty breakdown by nationality, and further details are expected as the investigation continues.
