An FIR has been filed against West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee over remarks she made regarding the killing of Inquilab Mancha convener Sharif Osman Hadi.
According to Indian media reports, the complaint was lodged on Thursday at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Siliguri, West Bengal. The FIR was filed by advocate Rinku Chatterjee Singh, who practices at the Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench of the Calcutta High Court.
The complaint reportedly invokes several non-bailable sections, including allegations related to sedition and statements considered potentially harmful to public order.
According to the complainant, Banerjee's remarks questioned the neutrality of the Election Commission and central security forces, allegedly creating confusion and fostering distrust among the public.
The complaint further alleges that by linking the Government of India and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to a killing that occurred in Bangladesh, Banerjee made statements that could damage India's international image and potentially create diplomatic tensions with a neighboring country.
The petition argues that such remarks could pose a threat to communal harmony and national security, emphasizing that statements made by prominent political leaders can have far-reaching consequences and therefore warrant a thorough investigation.
It remains unclear what action, if any, the police will take following the filing of the complaint. However, the issue has already become a subject of political debate.
Speaking on the Hadi killing case, Banerjee appeared to refer to Amit Shah and questioned who had allegedly been involved in the murder. She claimed to possess information about the matter but had refrained from making it public.
“If I reveal the names, Bangladesh will be shaken,” Banerjee reportedly said during her remarks.
The allegations contained in the FIR represent the complainant's claims and have not been adjudicated by a court. No official response from Banerjee or the Trinamool Congress was immediately available.
