Asim Iftikhar Ahmed Appointed Pakistan’s New Foreign Secretary

Pakistan has appointed its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, as the country’s new Foreign Secretary.

According to Pakistani newspaper Dawn, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced the appointment in a post on X on Wednesday.

Asim Iftikhar Ahmed will replace the current Foreign Secretary, Amna Baloch.

Ishaq Dar said that under Asim Iftikhar’s leadership, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry would work with greater efficiency and a clearer focus to safeguard the country’s national interests.

Dar also praised Amna Baloch for her service, expressing gratitude for her dedication and leadership during an important period.

After retiring from government service, Amna Baloch will take up a new assignment as Pakistan’s ambassador to Türkiye. Dar expressed hope that she would continue to serve Pakistan effectively in her new role.

Amna Baloch assumed office as Pakistan’s 33rd Foreign Secretary on September 11, 2024. She is scheduled to retire from government service on September 17.
