Modi, Putin Hold Bilateral Talks Ahead of BRICS Summit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held bilateral talks in New Delhi ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit, discussing cooperation across several key sectors, including defense, civilian nuclear energy, fertilizers, critical minerals, manufacturing, railways and steel.

The two leaders also discussed their goal of increasing bilateral trade between India and Russia to $100 billion by 2030. The possible sale of Russia’s Su-57 fighter jets to India was also a key topic during the meeting.

Modi and Putin further discussed India’s imports of Russian oil, ensuring stable and secure energy supplies, and ongoing international efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.

During the meeting, Modi presented Putin with a Russian-language translation of the ancient Tamil literary work Thirukkural, a classical text widely regarded as one of the most important works of Tamil literature.

Putin is scheduled to travel to India to attend the BRICS summit on September 13.
