NEWS DESKChinese investment in Bangladesh has seen a remarkable increase of 300 percent, according to Commerce Adviser of BD Sheikh Bashir Uddin. Speaking to reporters on Friday at the ‘Belt and Road Initiative in Bangladesh Exhibition’ held at the Bashundhara Convention Centre, Sheikh Bashir highlighted the potential for further growth through enhanced cooperation between the two countries.
“The joint experience and collaboration with China can propel Bangladesh forward,” he said. The advisor emphasized the importance of identifying weaknesses and sharing expertise to ensure steady progress. He noted that leveraging China’s strengths in production and packaging could significantly boost Bangladesh’s development prospects.
Despite being the world’s second-largest exporter in the ready-made garment sector, Sheikh Bashir acknowledged that Bangladesh still trails behind in overall industrial growth.
Addressing infrastructure concerns, he pointed to the alarming rate of road accident fatalities in Bangladesh. “There is an urgent need to improve road and transport infrastructure,” he said, calling for increased cooperation with China to develop the country’s transport systems.
In another development, a delegation from the United States is scheduled to visit Dhaka next Sunday to discuss reciprocal tariff issues. Talks on tariff structures and policies will be held with senior officials.
The exhibition, organized by the Chinese Embassy, features participation from 8 Bangladeshi and 32 Chinese companies across sectors such as infrastructure, technology, telecommunications, health, agriculture, energy, transport, and logistics. The event is open to visitors from 10 am to 7 pm on September 12 and 13.
