State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has called for stronger engagement by the United Nations to ensure the swift and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees to their homeland in Myanmar.
She made the call while speaking at a celebration of United Nations Day organised by Zonta International District 25 and Zonta Clubs of Bangladesh at a hotel in Dhaka on Saturday.
Shama Obaed said an effective United Nations and strong international solidarity were essential to addressing current global challenges and building a peaceful, prosperous and just world.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to advancing multilateralism under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, she reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to the three pillars of the United Nations: development, peace and security, and human rights.
The state minister highlighted Bangladesh’s longstanding contributions to various UN activities, including peacekeeping and peacebuilding operations.
She also underscored Bangladesh’s constructive role in promoting dialogue, building consensus and strengthening international cooperation through its participation in the ongoing 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, chaired by Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman.
Emphasising Bangladesh’s continued efforts to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Shama Obaed said reliable international support, affordable financing, technology transfer and uninterrupted access to markets were crucial for countries like Bangladesh as they pursue their aspirations to graduate from the category of least developed countries (LDCs).
On women’s empowerment, she praised the contributions of Bangladeshi women to UN peacekeeping operations.
She also stressed the need to eliminate gender-based violence, digital harassment and barriers to equal opportunities.
The state minister highlighted initiatives such as the recently launched Dhaka Dialogue as important platforms for advancing the UN Women, Peace and Security agenda.
