Three Nominations Filed for Bangladesh Presidential Election

Three nomination papers have been submitted for Bangladesh's upcoming presidential election, according to Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Ahmed said one nomination was filed on behalf of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, while two nominations were submitted in support of retired Colonel Oli Ahmed, Bir Bikrom.

Meanwhile, Mirza Fakhrul resigned from his positions as BNP Secretary General and member of the party's Standing Committee after securing the party's nomination for the presidency.

According to party sources, the decision to nominate Fakhrul was made during an emergency meeting of the BNP's top leadership held at the Secretariat on Thursday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tareq Rahman.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi confirmed the decision to reporters following the meeting.

If elected president, Fakhrul's departure from the post of secretary general would leave one of the party's most senior positions vacant, prompting speculation over his successor. Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed are among the names being discussed for the role.

The presidential election follows the resignation of former President Mohammed Shahabuddin on July 24. Under Bangladesh's Constitution, a new president must be elected within 90 days of the office becoming vacant.

The Election Commission announced the election schedule last Thursday, with voting set to take place on August 20.
