Malaysia’s former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, aged 100, has been taken to hospital after falling at his residence.

The information was confirmed on Tuesday by his aide Sufi Yusof, who said Mahathir was taken to the National Heart Institute for observation following the incident.

Mahathir has been experiencing health issues for several years. In July last year, he fell ill during a picnic organised to mark his 100th birthday and was subsequently hospitalised.

Speaking on Tuesday, Sufi Yusof said Mahathir is conscious, though it is not yet clear whether he will need to be formally admitted. “He is conscious. I do not know yet if he will be admitted. It is too early to say,” he said.

According to his aide, Mahathir fell while moving from one part of the balcony to his bedroom. No further details about his condition were disclosed.

The veteran Malaysian leader has previously undergone bypass surgery due to heart disease.

Mahathir served as Malaysia’s prime minister from 1981 to 2003, and again from 2018 to 2020. During his second term, he took office at the age of 94, becoming the world’s oldest elected leader at the time.
