The first day of unprecedented trilateral negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States ended in a stalemate on Friday (January 23). Hosted by the UAE, the high-stakes meeting failed to achieve a breakthrough as both Moscow and Kyiv remained firm on their territorial demands, particularly regarding the control of the Donbas region.

Diplomacy vs. Destruction While negotiators gathered in Abu Dhabi to draft a peace roadmap, the situation on the ground in Ukraine took a violent turn. Overnight, Russian forces launched a massive wave of drone and ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv and Kharkiv. At least one person was killed and over 23 others wounded. The strikes severely damaged residential buildings, hospitals, and a maternity ward in Kharkiv, while Kyiv faced critical disruptions to water and heating services during a freezing winter.

Zelenskyy’s Stance Despite the lack of immediate progress, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy remains cautiously engaged in the process. "Our representatives are in the UAE, providing hourly updates," he stated, emphasizing that while the diplomatic effort is vital, the ultimate outcome depends on Russia, as they initiated the conflict. As the second day of talks resumes, the international community watches closely to see if U.S.-led mediation can bridge the deep-seated divide over territory.
