Pakistan’s Supreme Court has been informed that former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has only 15 percent vision remaining in his right eye.

The court-appointed amicus curiae, Barrister Salman Safdar, submitted a seven-page report on Wednesday after meeting Khan at Adiala Jail on Tuesday. According to the report, Khan had repeatedly complained of blurred vision over the past three months, but prison authorities allegedly failed to take appropriate action.

Earlier, a medical report released by PTI indicated that Khan is suffering from a blockage in the retinal vein of his right eye, medically known as Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO). The condition prevents proper blood drainage from the retina, leading to blurred vision. Medical experts warn that without prompt and specialized treatment, the affected eye could suffer permanent blindness.

Barrister Safdar said the 73-year-old former cricket star appeared extremely distressed during their meeting. He noted that Khan’s eyes were continuously watering and that he frequently used tissues while speaking.

Reacting to the report, Chief Justice Yahya Afridi described Khan’s health as a matter of serious concern requiring immediate intervention. The court has ordered the formation of a specialist medical team to examine his eye without delay. Additionally, the court directed authorities to allow Khan to speak by phone with his two sons, who reside in London, by February 16.

PTI strongly condemned the situation, warning that officials would be held responsible for any harm to the former prime minister’s health. The party has demanded that Khan be immediately transferred to a reputable hospital under the supervision of his personal physician.

Imran Khan was removed from office through a parliamentary vote of no confidence in 2022. Following his ouster, more than 100 cases were filed against him. He has been detained at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi since August 2024.

Khan is currently serving a 14-year sentence in a £190 million corruption case. His wife, Bushra Bibi, has also been sentenced to seven years in the same case.

Imran Khan served as Pakistan’s 19th Prime Minister from August 2018 to April 2022.
