Venezuela’s president Nicolás Maduro remains the country’s lawful head of state and government despite being abducted by the United States military, according to Acting President Delcy Rodríguez.

In a recent interview, Rodríguez said Maduro’s absence has not led to any major constitutional changes in Venezuela’s system of governance.

She stated that although Venezuela has reached agreements with the United States on oil and various political issues following Maduro’s abduction, the country continues to function in accordance with its constitution.

“I can tell you that Nicolás Maduro is the legitimate president of the country,” Rodríguez said. “I am telling you this as a lawyer, because I am a lawyer myself.”

Rodríguez also asserted that President Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores are both innocent.

No immediate response to Rodríguez’s claims was available from U.S. officials.
