Making history, Bangladeshi-origin Tanvir Shahnawaz has been elected as a Member of Parliament in Canada's federal Parliament. He won the by-election from the Toronto riding of East York representing the Liberal Party.
Following Dolly Begum, he is the second person of Bangladeshi descent to be elected to the Canadian Parliament, sparking a wave of celebration within the local Bangladeshi community.
Having roots in Bangladesh and raised in Toronto, Shahnawaz built a strong connection with the local community through years of grassroots engagement before entering federal politics. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has extended his congratulations on the grand victory, and the newly-elected MP is scheduled to be sworn in later this week.
