Death Toll Rises to 1,344 Following Catastrophic Floods in Nepal

The death toll from the sudden, devastating floods in Nepal's Bhote Koshi River has risen to 1,344, according to Nepal Police, as rescue and search operations continue extensively across the affected regions.

The catastrophic floods struck Nepal on August 26, triggered by a suspected glacial lake outburst in the Himalayas that sent massive walls of water rushing through villages near the Tibet border, displacing countless residents and severely disrupting normal life. As survivors attempt to rebuild their homes, health authorities are warning of water contamination and potential infectious disease outbreaks. According to The Kathmandu Post, tests conducted in Bidur—one of the hardest-hit areas—revealed the presence of E. coli bacteria in five out of fifteen drinking water sources.

To manage the aftermath, authorities are actively collecting DNA samples to identify recovered victims. A dedicated force of 7,912 police personnel has been deployed to lead post-flood rescue operations, relief distribution, body management, and the restoration of damaged road infrastructure.
