A temporary ceasefire has been implemented in the occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky to deliver humanitarian aid and evacuate civilians. However, conflicting claims have emerged from the White House and the Vatican regarding who actually brokered the agreement.

Announced recently, the ceasefire aims to assist over a thousand civilians and safely evacuate those wishing to leave the war-torn city, which has been under Russian control since early 2022 and currently faces severe shortages of food and medical supplies.

According to the White House, the breakthrough was achieved primarily through the direct intervention of First Lady Melania Trump, without which aid delivery would not have been possible. Conversely, the Vatican asserts that Pope Leo XIV’s diplomatic efforts laid the groundwork for the truce, highlighting the Pope's prior communications with both Russian and Ukrainian leadership.

While Ukrainian officials have expressed gratitude to Melania and her team, the differing narratives from Washington and the Vatican leave the exact extent of each party's role open to debate, adding a layer of diplomatic and political complexity to the humanitarian effort.
