U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the redeployment of two nuclear submarines closer to Russia in response to what he called a “provocative” statement by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

On August 1, Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating: “I have ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned appropriately. Foolish and inflammatory comments demand more than just words.”

This sharp response came after Medvedev warned Trump about the dangers of the so-called "Dead Hand", an automated Soviet-era nuclear retaliation system designed to ensure a counterstrike even if Russia’s leadership is wiped out in a first-strike attack.

Trump added, “Words matter — and they often lead to unexpected consequences. I hope this won’t be one of those cases.”

In recent weeks, Trump and Medvedev have engaged in increasingly tense verbal exchanges. Medvedev, who currently serves as Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council under President Vladimir Putin, has become a vocal critic of U.S. foreign policy.

Analysts warn that such military maneuvers — especially involving nuclear-capable assets — are likely to further escalate tensions between NATO and Russia, raising broader security concerns across Europe and the North Atlantic.
