US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that the United States does not expect to take any further action against Venezuela following the detention of President Nicolás Maduro, according to remarks conveyed by US Senator Mike Lee.
Speaking on Saturday, Senator Lee said he had spoken by phone with Rubio, who confirmed that President Maduro is currently in US custody. Lee quoted Rubio as saying that, with Maduro detained, he does not anticipate any additional military or political steps against Venezuela.
Lee added that the US strikes carried out earlier were intended to ensure the safety and protection of those involved in executing the arrest warrant against Maduro. “The attacks were conducted to secure and defend the personnel who were carrying out the arrest operation,” Lee said.
Earlier, in a post on social media platform X, Senator Lee raised constitutional concerns about the operation, writing that he was “eagerly waiting to find out whether this action can be constitutionally justified without a declaration of war or authorization for the use of military force.”
On Saturday, former US President Donald Trump claimed in a post on his social media platform Truth Social that the United States had “successfully carried out a large-scale attack against Venezuela and its leader President Nicolás Maduro,” adding that Maduro and his wife had been detained and removed from the country.
The situation continues to draw scrutiny in Washington, particularly over the legal and constitutional basis of the operation, even as US officials signal that no further action against Venezuela is currently planned.
