International Desk: US President Donald Trump has announced a historic agreement with NATO to ensure full and permanent military access to Greenland.

Speaking on Friday (January 23, 2026), Trump stated that the US would work closely with NATO to secure the Arctic region, including plans to build a sophisticated "Golden Dome" defense system. While Trump previously sparked controversy by suggesting the acquisition of Greenland, this new deal suggests a strategic shift towards multilateral cooperation.

However, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized that while security talks with the US are ongoing, Greenland’s sovereignty is non-negotiable. Simultaneously, the European Union has pledged a substantial investment package for Greenland's development and warned of firm action should the US pursue any unilateral takeover. Both the EU and NATO are focused on bolstering their presence in the Arctic to counter the growing influence of Russia and China in the region.
