Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has formally requested comprehensive details regarding the health status and operational capacity of veteran Senator Mitch McConnell amid growing public concern over his prolonged hospitalization.
In a letter dispatched to the Republican Senate leader on Wednesday (July 8), the Democratic governor urged McConnell to maintain transparency and provide full disclosure to the residents of Kentucky. The 84-year-old lawmaker has been hospitalized since June 14, following an emergency medical services (EMS) dispatch to his residence to rescue an unresponsive individual, according to a CBS News report. However, McConnell's office has yet to confirm the exact cause of his admission or if the emergency call was for the senator.
Governor Beshear emphasized in his letter that it is the fundamental responsibility of elected officials to remain transparent with the public regarding their capacity to serve, while also wishing him a speedy recovery. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Senator John Barrasso, the second-ranking Republican in the Senate, stated that colleagues have been in contact with McConnell, asserting that he is eager to return to the Senate chamber soon. Although McConnell previously announced he will not seek re-election, he has expressed his firm intent to serve out the remainder of his current term.
