US President Donald Trump cast his ballot in person for the midterm elections in Palm Beach, Florida, on Saturday, despite years of criticism of various forms of early voting. He is now urging Republican supporters to vote early in an effort to mobilize voters as his party faces the risk of losing control of Congress.

Trump has emphasized early voting at campaign rallies ahead of the November 3 election. Asked by reporters on Saturday whether he had voted for Republican candidates, the president replied, “Of course.”

Since losing the 2020 presidential election, Trump has repeatedly made false claims of widespread electoral fraud. He has alleged, without providing evidence, that the results were manipulated through methods including mail-in ballots and ballot drop boxes.

On Saturday, Trump told reporters that a US attorney had uncovered potentially hundreds of thousands of illegal votes.

Earlier this month, the Justice Department sued California, alleging that the state had failed to cooperate with efforts to verify the citizenship status of 20,000 suspected noncitizens. California has urged a court to reject a request to set aside the 20,000 mail-in ballots in question. State officials have described the allegations as a “reckless political stunt.”

Since returning to office last year, Trump has taken steps to expand the federal government’s role in election administration. His administration has sought to restrict mail-in voting, while the president has pushed for legislation requiring voters to present government-issued identification or other proof of citizenship.

However, Republican leaders in the Senate have said there is insufficient support to pass the proposed SAVE America Act.

Trump himself voted by mail in Florida’s Republican primary in August. He has also said he would use the same method to vote in another special election this year.

Throughout much of October, Trump campaigned across the country for Republican candidates, seeking to help his party retain control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the November midterm elections.
