Billionaire Elon Musk has donated approximately $443 million to Republican candidates and political groups supporting the party ahead of the November 3 US midterm elections, reigniting debate over the growing influence of wealthy individuals in American politics.

At an exchange rate of Tk 123 per dollar, the amount is equivalent to approximately Tk 54.39 billion.

According to a report by Forbes, Musk donated $77 million to his political action committee, America PAC, during the first two weeks of October. Of that amount, $74.8 million was contributed directly between October 6 and 14, while approximately $1.98 million came through his company, United States of America Inc. His total political contributions for the current midterm election cycle have reached about $443 million.

Campaign finance records show that Musk is the largest individual donor supporting Republicans in the current election cycle. His spending is primarily aimed at helping the party retain control of both chambers of Congress—the House of Representatives and the Senate.

US midterm elections take place halfway through a president's four-year term. This year's elections will determine all seats in the House of Representatives and roughly one-third of the seats in the Senate. The outcome could significantly affect President Donald Trump's ability to implement his administration's policies and maintain political leverage in Congress.

One of Musk's key targets is the Senate race in Texas. According to Forbes, America PAC has spent approximately $27.9 million campaigning against Democratic candidate James Talarico. The group has also spent another $4.8 million supporting Republican candidate Ken Paxton.

The organisation has additionally financed campaigns against Democratic candidates in Ohio, Michigan, Iowa and Maine.

Musk's financial backing extends beyond advertising. His political organisation is also spending money on distributing campaign materials, conducting door-to-door voter outreach and encouraging people to vote. The funding could give Republicans a significant boost in grassroots campaigning during the final stretch of the election.

Musk's spending has intensified political controversy. Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico has accused the billionaire of trying to take control of the state's Senate seat.

Talarico has argued that the massive financial resources of ultra-wealthy individuals risk diminishing the influence of ordinary voters in the political system.

Musk's spending in the current midterm elections has already surpassed his contributions during the 2024 presidential election. According to Forbes, he spent approximately $288 million supporting Donald Trump and other Republican candidates during that election cycle.

His contributions this year have significantly exceeded that figure, underscoring his growing role as a major financial force in Republican politics.

Musk and Trump maintained a close relationship before and after the 2024 presidential election. However, tensions emerged after Musk joined the administration, eventually leading him to leave his government role.

Despite their political differences, Musk's companies continue to hold contracts with the US government, keeping his business interests and political influence under scrutiny.

Some Democrats have called for investigations into Musk's government-related activities and the federal contracts awarded to his aerospace company, SpaceX.

As Americans prepare to vote on November 3, the election is shaping up to be more than a contest for control of Congress. It is also becoming a test of how far the financial power of billionaires can shape the country's political landscape.
