NEWS DESKThe U.S. Embassy in several Countries are warning that people who overstay their visas in the United States could be subject to a "permanent ban" on travel to the U.S.
The embassy in Dhaka issued the warning on May 19, writing on its Facebook account, "If you remain in the United States beyond your authorized period of stay, you could be deported and could face a permanent ban on traveling to the United States in the future."
"Visa fraud is a serious offense- with serious consequences," the embassy continued. "Providing false information or fake documents can lead to a permanent visa ban and even criminal charges." Working with "illicit visa agents is NOT worth the risk to you and your future," the embassy's statement continued.
On Indian social media, the post sparked debate and controversy. "This language is undiplomatic and inappropriate. You are addressing all the people of India as if they were illegal immigrants in the USA. This is the first time I have seen an embassy issue what appears to be a threat to citizens of its host country," wrote one person on X.
"The purpose of your intended travel and other facts will determine what type of visa is required under U.S. immigration law. As a visa applicant, you will need to establish that you meet all requirements to receive the category of visa for which you are applying," the website says.
"A citizen of a foreign country who seeks to enter the United States generally must first obtain a U.S. visa, which is placed in the traveler’s passport, a travel document issued by the traveler’s country of citizenship," it adds. "Certain international travelers may be eligible to travel to the United States without a visa if they meet the requirements for visa-free travel. The Visa section of this website is all about U.S. visas for foreign citizens to travel to the United States."
