US President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to countries that continue to conduct trade with Iran, threatening to impose additional tariffs on their exports to the United States. He recently signed an executive order outlining the potential measures.

According to a report published on Saturday, the executive order was issued on Friday. While it does not specify a fixed tariff rate, it cites 25 percent as an example. The order states that any country that “directly or indirectly purchases, imports, or receives goods or services from Iran” could face such tariffs on its exports to the US.

Although Trump did not comment directly on the executive order, he reiterated his position while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, saying that Iran would not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons.

Earlier, in January this year, Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social that any country doing business with Iran would be required to pay a 25 percent tariff on all trade with the United States. At that time, however, no concrete enforcement mechanism was announced.

In a statement, the White House said the new executive order reaffirms the ongoing “national emergency” related to Iran, adding that the president may amend the order if circumstances change.

The statement said the measures are intended to hold Iran accountable for its efforts to develop nuclear capabilities, support for terrorism, ballistic missile development, and actions contributing to regional instability.

On the same day, the US State Department also imposed sanctions on 15 entities accused of engaging in transactions involving Iranian-origin oil and petrochemical products. Iran has not issued an immediate response to the latest measures.

Iran is already under extensive US and Western sanctions but has repeatedly maintained that its nuclear program is entirely peaceful.
