U.S. President Donald Trump said that recent discussions between the United States and Iran have been “very strong” and that both sides have reached agreement on “major issues.”
Speaking to reporters at a Florida airport before departing for Memphis, Mississippi, on Monday, Trump said talks held on Sunday would continue into Monday.
“We’ve had very strong discussions. Let’s see where it leads,” he said. “I would say there is a consensus forming on major issues. In fact, we agree on almost everything.”
Trump added that both countries are eager to reach a deal. “They (Iran) very much want to make a deal, and we want to make a deal as well. We’ll probably be speaking again today, possibly by phone,” he said.
The U.S. president noted that his Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner are leading the discussions.
Although Trump did not name the Iranian official involved, he said a “high-level, highly respected leader” from Iran participated in the talks.
However, he added that the United States has not yet received any communication from Mojtaba Khamenei, and said he is unsure whether Khamenei is still alive. Trump also noted that he does not wish for Khamenei’s death.
