US Judge Fines Meta Additional $567M Over Child Safety Failures

A US state judge in New Mexico ordered tech conglomerate Meta Platforms Inc. to pay an additional $567 million (£421 million) in damages for failing to adequately protect children from digital harms across its social media platforms.

On Thursday (August 6), State Judge Bryan Biedscheid labeled Meta a "public nuisance" analogous to environmental polluters, mandating that the fine be directed toward a state-managed fund designed to mitigate adolescent online harm. The verdict escalates Meta's total penalties in the case to $942 million following an earlier $375 million fine.

Comparing Meta’s operation to a factory spewing hazardous output, the court cited its algorithms and content delivery as toxic to youth wellbeing. Meta firmly rejected the ruling, announcing plans to appeal the judgment. A Meta spokesperson maintained that the company continuously deploys advanced safety guardrails to shield younger demographics, arguing the lawsuit misrepresents platform realities.
