US Military Intensifies Naval Blockade Against Iran, Disrupting Maritime Trade

The United States military has intensified its naval blockade against Iran, leading to a near-complete halt in the country’s maritime trade.

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that within 36 hours of the blockade taking effect, almost all vessel traffic to and from Iran had been suspended.

CENTCOM Commander Brad Cooper said that nearly 90 percent of Iran’s economy depends on international maritime trade, suggesting the blockade could place significant economic pressure on the country.

U.S. President Donald Trump had previously announced that the measure was intended to stop Iran’s oil exports. It is estimated that the disruption could result in losses of approximately $435 million per day.

In response, Iran has warned that if its ports are targeted, no port in the Persian Gulf or the Gulf of Oman would be considered safe.

Despite the restrictions, reports indicate that some shipping activity continues. A tanker named “Rich Starry” reportedly attempted to pass through the Strait of Hormuz even amid the ongoing blockade.
