Federal law enforcement agents searched the Washington, D.C., residence of US Representative Ilhan Omar on Monday morning as part of an ongoing criminal investigation, the US Department of Justice said.
The department did not immediately disclose the specific focus of the investigation or what, if anything, investigators found during the search.
Reports by British newspaper The Guardian, the Associated Press (AP) and US news outlet Fox News said Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents carried out the search under a court-authorised warrant approved by the Justice Department.
A Justice Department spokesperson said HSI had executed a search warrant in the Washington, D.C., area as part of an ongoing federal investigation.
Video published by Fox News showed several officers wearing jackets marked “HSI” at a location identified as Omar’s residence.
Omar’s office, the Justice Department, the Department of Homeland Security and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Investigation Reportedly Examines Childhood Immigration Records
Fox News, citing multiple unnamed sources, reported that investigators were examining immigration documents completed by Omar’s father during her childhood. Officials have not publicly provided details about the scope of the investigation.
President Donald Trump and his allies have repeatedly questioned Omar’s family’s immigration history, alleging fraud and raising the possibility of revoking her US citizenship and deporting her. However, the allegations have not been substantiated by publicly established evidence.
Omar has consistently denied the accusations.
She was elected to Congress in 2018 and took office in January 2019. Alongside Rashida Tlaib, she became one of the first two Muslim women to serve in the US House of Representatives.
Trump Administration Officials Have Signalled Scrutiny
Officials in the Trump administration have hinted for months that Omar could face investigation.
At a campaign rally on Saturday, Trump criticised the Minnesota congresswoman and said members of his administration were examining the matter seriously. He also referred to Vice President JD Vance.
In December last year, Trump alleged that Omar had married her brother to help him obtain US immigration status through a marriage-based application. No reliable public evidence has established the allegation.
Days later, Trump's border policy chief, Tom Homan, said authorities were gathering documents related to Omar. He indicated that an HSI investigator would examine possible immigration fraud.
In March, Vance told right-wing media personality Benny Johnson that the administration believed Omar had committed immigration fraud. He also said he had discussed potential remedial action with senior Trump adviser Stephen Miller.
Last month, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said an investigation involving Omar was underway and that action could follow. Homan, however, declined to provide further details, saying he could not comment on an ongoing criminal investigation and that HSI should be allowed to continue its work.
Long-Running Allegations Involving Former Husband
A central issue in the controversy surrounding Omar involves allegations about her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi.
Trump and his supporters have claimed that Elmi was actually Omar’s brother and that their marriage was arranged to facilitate his immigration to the United States. Omar has denied the allegations.
The two reportedly separated under religious customs several years before their legal divorce was finalised in 2017.
Marriage fraud involving immigration benefits is a serious federal offence in the United States. However, the applicable statute of limitations and its application depend on the specific alleged offence and circumstances.
Last month, the New York Post, citing an unnamed senior immigration official, reported that the administration could initiate proceedings to revoke Omar’s citizenship if sufficient evidence showed that she or her father had provided false information in immigration applications.
The report also raised questions about Omar’s age and her father’s professional background. Those claims have not been independently established.
Search Raises Questions Ahead of Midterm Elections
The search comes just three weeks before the US midterm elections, potentially intensifying questions about whether the Trump administration is using federal law enforcement for political purposes.
Critics have repeatedly accused Trump of targeting political opponents through investigations and legal action during his second term.
The search is likely to add to that debate, particularly given Trump's longstanding public criticism of Omar. However, the execution of a search warrant does not establish that a crime has been committed or that the congresswoman is guilty of wrongdoing.
The direction of the case will depend on the evidence gathered and any further statements from investigators.
Trump’s Rhetoric Against Somali Americans Draws Criticism
Omar is one of the most prominent Somali American politicians in the United States. Trump's attacks on her have coincided with broader criticism of the Somali American community.
At Saturday’s rally, Trump described Somalia as a country plagued by crime and hardship and suggested that the US Constitution was not intended for Omar.
Two days earlier, he claimed on social media that Minnesota was being taken over by Somali immigrants, although the vast majority of Somali Americans in the state are US citizens.
In December last year, Trump also referred to people of Somali descent as “garbage” and urged them to return to their country of origin.
His remarks have drawn accusations that his administration is encouraging racist attitudes towards immigrant communities and ethnic minorities.
The search of Omar’s home is likely to intensify the debate over immigration enforcement, political retaliation and the treatment of minority communities in the United States.
For now, authorities have not publicly detailed the investigation’s precise objectives or disclosed its findings. Further conclusions will depend on verified evidence and official information released as the investigation proceeds.
